Joe Karwacki

A lifelong professional musician and educator, Mr. Karwacki gained his Bachelor of Music from Ithaca College in 1978 and continued on to pass rigorous testing in 1980, achieving the status of Registered Tuner Technician in the Piano Technician’s Guild.  He subsequently served 3 consecutive 2 year terms as President, Vice President, and Secretary in the Syracuse Chapter of the PTG.

As owner of Stage Music Pianos, he has established himself as a piano rebuilder and tuner for over 27 years and includes in his resume restorations for the late Mistislav Rostropovich, the Stanley Theatre, Colgate University, Oneida Community Mansion House, the recently restored Hotel Utica, and many private clients.  He has met and tuned for many performing artists including Midori, Emmanuel Ax, Mistislav Rostropovich, Barry Manilow, Gerrick Ohlsson, and many others.

His professional performing career includes being Principal Double Bassist for the Utica Symphony Orchestra for the past 18 years, past member of the Binghamton, Schenectedy, Catskill, and Albany Symphony Orchestras, the Glimmerglass Opera Orchestra, Alice Tully Hall performances, and a guest performer at the 1978 National MENC Conference in Chicago.

As a composer, Mr. Karwacki has written for many genres of music including middle school orchestra, cadenzas for major artists, and small group ensembles.  Performances of his works include those in Chicago by the Ithaca College Double Bass Quartet, in Syracuse by members of the Syracuse Symphony Double Bass Section, and in and around the greater Utica area.
